It's tartar and staining (probably tartar).
It needs to be scraped off. There are claims of Petzlife taking care of that or softening it and those are peoples' personal experiences, so I won't say they are wrong. I will say I decided against the product and a very popular, board certified, small animal dentist does not like it at all. The alcohol content concers him and I don't think he's convinced that it works anyway. I have to go with his opinion because he has spent his life studying teeth and I can't say he doesn't recommend it because he wouldn't make money off of it because he could always sell it. So.... We use OraVet.
