I'm no expert, but the "book" I downloaded from Amazon said paper training isn't really housebreaking a dog because they are still going inside. Think about it -- I did. What are you going to do? Bring a bunch of papers and pads to a friends house if you visit?

Not sure why it works, most of the time, but I take Ruger out a lot, and put pads down where he has most of his accidents inside. Lately, when I'm too lazy to get up when he gets up, he's been going on the pads.

Like you, I have rarely caught him when he's going where he's not supposed to, so I kinda gave up on that one. But, after about two weeks he started to let me know when he wants to go out, either by osmosis or whining or barking. It's a long way from perfect, but it's way better than it used to be.

BTW, today it was blowing snow sideways and we still went out, so maybe I'm the one who's getting trained. :-)
