I would definitely consult your vet, but I would try Frontline anyway despite the rumor you've heard. I don't live in Florida, but we've had great results with Frontline for quite a few years. I've never used any other product, though.
Pet Pharmacy has a few different brands, so I'd browse that and see what you can find, and then talk to your vet about it.
