i've heard of going and sitting in the waiting room for a while, and just observing what goes on...seeing how the techs interact with patients and owners, and watching the receptionists on the phone and in person...if you feel comfortable setting up an appointment, then do that, and if you don't like them after one appointment, try a new vet when it's time for another. good luck!
