To be honest, I end up cleaning the lens at the most inoppertune times (i.e. outside) and fine that a little breath and cotten shirt work just as well...I just keep that to a minimum. But when there's time, I use a Gitzo blower which works wonders. It actually can help in moving dust within the lens to a place where it wouldn't interfere with the final image. The blower is what I use for the back end of the lens. Believe it or not, it does do a good job at getting rid of specks.

I clean the sensor (it's not as scary as people paint it to be) with Sensor Swabs, soaked with Eclipse, from Photographic Solutions. I've cleaned my own sensor for over four/five years now and haven't done damage to it. You just want to follow the instructions and take your time with it.

Those few things have, for the most part, kept my camera and lenses clean for some time now.
