Milo caught a bat! Yesterday morning I looked out my window and saw a small (probably a baby) bat hanging on my house. I walked outside to see what I could do and by the time I got there, it was belly up on the ground. I started to walk towards it, but Milo saw it at the same time. He ran over and picked it up in his mouth. He wouldn't release it, so I had to pry it out of his mouth. I immediately called the vet who said his current rabies doesn't expire until June, but I needed to bring him in for a booster shot - no rush - I could wait until Monday or Tuesday since they don't do vaccinations on the weekends. I scheduled an appointment for Monday as early as they had available.
I called animal control to come and pick up the bat and test it for rabies (I am in California and bats and skunks are the number one carries of rabies here). I am getting really scared that even though Milo is vaccinated, if the bat is positive he may still be able to contract rabies.
Does anyone here have any experience with something like this? I've been trying to find answers on the internet, but there is just too much conflicting information out there. People here seem to be so much more knowledgeable. Thanks everyone! |
