Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Such a tragic occurence that most likely cost the Pitty his life because of a bad owner. I pray it does not cost your son's dog his. I have lost a precious 6 yr old Yorkie to a viscious attack from a rescue dog. It's a nightmare. Just last night I went to visit my son in his new place. His roomate has a Pitbull that I was very nervous about (and I have a Rottie). This Pitty was just a sucky as my Rottie, a real baby. My YT has way more attitude than Jean (the Pit Bull). I do think they should regulate who owns these dogs and all of the powerhouse breeds), and mandate training, and socialization classes, to weed out irresponsible owners.
