I am sorry, but this is the OWNER'S fault. If you don't train/control your dog properly, this is what happens. These dogs are NOT overly aggressive by nature, at all. How many stories do we get on here about Yorkies biting people or barking at people (go to the Training forum to see what I'm talking about)? It's just that Yorkies are small and cannot inflict the damage a pit bull can, so they get a pass, but it's hardly the pit bulls fault that it is a larger breed.

Believe it or not, the top three aggressive dogs are Daschunds, Chihuahuas, and Beagles. The Most Aggressive Dog Breeds; Dachshund #1?? For the Love of the Dog

I am VERY sorry that your son and dog got hurt, and I wish for a speedy recovery, but please don't put all the blame on the dog.
