My vet told me that many people make the mistake of pulling out on the tail when they are cutting and that makes it seem longer, then when they cut it off, it recedes back and they are left with a tail shorter than they wanted. He also said that if you cut a tail to short you can cause incontinence and other problems.
From what I have read the proper length to cut would be half the length of the original tail but I know that if I ever have a litter I will make darn sure the vet KNOWS where I want them cut. I won't just leave it to his judgement. It actually wouldn't have bothered me if she had been left with a full length tail.
