Hi Cathy, the small or oblong brushes are great for brushing out tangles & mats. The regular softer brushes glide through some tangles bc of their soft 'give' of the cushion, but I can feel it. That's when I go in & comb it out w/a fine comb. If the mat is too stubborn, I snip it once w/a mini blunt nosed scissor, then comb it out. Hope that helps.
