Default Coat Care Questions

My Mr. Darcy is 19 months old with a pretty silky black and gold coat. It's easy to keep in shape and never mats.
Jackson, his 8 month old brother has more of a soft, tri colored coat which is very thick and a bit wavy. When I bathe and brush him out it gets shiny and soft, but not for long. He easily mats under his "elbows" and around his shoulders which have to be worked out by hand or with silk.
Both are on an excellent diet that includes omegas, vitamins, etc. I ponder if Jacksons' wild puppy coat will result in a wild adult coat as well. Should I have the puppy fur trimed away to see what grows out next? Is it smart to just have him trimmed short in a manner that makes his type of coat easier to manage? I'd like to know what those of you with pups with coats such as Jacksons' decide to do.
There are photos of both in my photo album.
