Don't worry, you are not the first nor shall you be the last to be under the misconception that just breeding to a smaller male is all it takes. Sure, the stud may be small, but what about the other dogs in his line? What if he was a runt and had 8-9 lb siblings? The genetics of ALL the dogs, on both sides come in to play and have to be considered and studied...not just the breeding pair.
