I have a canvas crate that I use on the boat. While it is nice, it is not very study. If for some reason the dog got rambunctious, he could roll the crate over! As someone suggested, air doesn't circulate as well as in a wire crate. You could also look at getting a expen. You can put the canvas crate in there so your puppy can go in to sleep but then have the pen for a bit more room to play and potty on a pad.
Also, if you have a bed bath and beyond near you, they have the canvas crates there. I got one from there a year ago. I am sure that they still have them there.
