I know what you mean! My finger nails chip so quickly. Plus I love to cook... and manage to destroy a good manicure with detergents, knife mistakes, etc sooo quickly.
I never get my fingers done anymore. My nails are trimmed very short and kept neat. I am lucky that I have long nail beds so my hands still look ok without polish
Toes I keep painted spring, summer and fall - and in winter if I am going formal and wearing open toe shoes. My color is a dark burgundy/ red. Or, I get a french. All depends. I sometimes do them myself, but also treat myself to the occasional pedicure...
Back to the question of the OP -- I would not necessarily make them match. However I would use the same color family, lighter on the hands, darker on the feet. Or, would probably go french on my hands and color on my toes
