I transitioned my adult dogs from a lifetime of peeing on pellets in a litter box to washable pee pads in a few days. At first, they tried to hang out on the clean pads and I had to shoo them off and tell them to "BE CLEAN" on them (that is their magic word to go potty). Anyway once they started peeing on it, they go the idea that hanging out there might not be too cool. Every now and then when a fresh clean pad comes out of the dryer, I will find Daisy trying to sit her buns on it and I have to remind her that it is the toilet not a lounge. So, yes, transitioning is not too bad if you're consistent. I also do keep my washables in the same places where litter boxes were to avoid confusion. Good luck.
