I have both the 50 1.8 and 1.4. You will probably love the 1.8. It really is a great lens that produces sharp photos. You will be able to get the kind of portraits that you want where you can blur the background to isolate your subject. The l.4 allows in a little more light and is a little sharper wide open. I'd recommend getting the 1.8. For the difference in price between the 1.4 and the 1.8 you could get the 35 1.8 lens for wider angles. Right now it is unnecessary to spend the money for the 50 1.4. If you find you love the 50 1.8 but still want to use it in situations with less light, you can always sell it and get the 1.4. They are both excellent lenses.
