I have two yorkiepoos. Trixie is 10lbs with floppy ears and Lilly is almost 4lbs with standing ears.
Both are really smart. Potty train was a breeze. They learn so quickly and often pick up on things on their own. I love teaching them new tricks, they pick it up so quickly and are eager to learn more.
However they are both very hyper. Of course they can be calm too but they do have a lot of energy.
I am sure though that as it does with any breed it varies from dog to dog how their personalities are.
So I wouldn't completely rule out yorkies as not all are rambunctious. Some can be very calm and laid back.
Another breed they might consider is a maltese. Every one that I met was so calm. I too own a maltese girl and she is so much calmer and laid back compared to my yorkies.
