Some little girls like to mark, too! My little sweet Daisy is one of them. We use this rule:
- When the leash is in my RIGHT hand, she gets to go ahead and sniff and investigate and do her thing.
- When the leash is in my LEFT hand, it is time to heel and stop only when I decide. (If she really needs to go, she will fall behind and act funny)
Dogs and kids love rules. Before our walk, we go through a few commands like SIT, STAY, COME, DOWN, letting her know who the leader is going to be. Don't forget to praise, praise, praise!
We stop and "wait" at every street until I give the "okay" command. And then we try to have a destination place where she gets a break to sniff around a little and get some praises. Then it is back home again.
At first I had a hard time getting her to heel. So I took her stroller and held the leash so she had to walk next to the back wheel. That way, the stroller was the boss, not me. ("Hey, it's not my fault sweetie, that big stroller said so.") I got this idea from Cesar Milan using a bicycle or skates to exercise big dogs.
