I don't think he would get depressed, but he will feel "different" for a little while. It shouldn't be too extreme if you are still leaving some hair and not shaving him. The trade off for Simba, in not enduring brushing he hates should be worth it.

I've had Tiki and Meika both taken from 6"+ long hair, down to 1", and the only change is that they seemed more playful and puppy-like. Neither mind brushing, so for me it was just a style change.
