I won't leave them, either. I've always insisted on an appointment and an approximate pick up time. If they can't accomodate my request, then I looked elsewhere until I did find someone. I won't leave mine like that, either, and I didn't do that with my previous yorkie, either. I'm overprotective, too, but if we don't protect them and look out for their welfare, who else will?
