Default Dog show listings

www.infodog.com

this is what I go to on the web when I want to know when and where the latest show is in my state. I live in North Carolina. There will be a large all breed conformation show this week, in fact it started today and will run through this Saturday. Before that I had to go by what was listed in the local news paper or tv news shout out.

I found out about infodog several years ago, but recently someone,(I forget whether on this forum or another dog show forum) they may have matches listed. This I can never find in my state, not sure if I am not looking at the right time or what.

There are also a couple of other dog show services, but I think they organize dog shows in the midwest and other parts of the US. I am very ignorant of these, so you'll have to ask other dog show enthusiests in your area about those or you might find them online.

infodog allows you to click on your state and will list shows that are going to be in that state and also have the month and days listed.

You'll have to delve further into the site to get the actual time and number of dogs listed. It will tell you how many dogs have been registered to show,(warning, not all dogs will actually show up) in puppy class, etc.

When you go to an AKC show they will have a catalog that you will have to purchase,( $5 sometimes more in my experience) and they will list the dog's name, sex, breeder, and handler and what class they are being exhibited in. It will also name the judge, ring number and time. It will have places for you to record the ribbons that the dogs have won. This is often quite hard to see unless you can get close. Visitors have to stay out of certain areas that the dogs enter and exit,(very understandable) handlers often are quick to put the ribbons in their pockets for safe keeping. Even using a camera, I am not always quick enough or in the right spot to see who got lucky!! The catalog will also have an index which may or may not have contact information on breeders.

All of this will vary due to dogs not being able to show up for one reason or other or times may vary due to how many dogs show up and how fast or slow the judge/handlers are, so I have learned to show up early and be prepared to stay late I always enjoy looking at the other dogs too and visiting the various vendors. Bring a snack and know where the closest restaurant is. The show I visit has a restaurant inside, but it is limiting and pricy for what one gets. Those folks who come with family and friends can order out or go fetch for those who have to stay with the dogs.

Also reading the fine print on the AKC pdf may give you some important pointers. Such as I'd like to take my daughter and grandson along. They can go as long as we don't bring the stroller along inside the show! Now if we had traveled a couple of hours to get to that show, finding out this small bit of info would not have been known till we got to the door!

Good luck with finding a handler, I am learning about this myself.

Lots of luck and have fun !!
