Is Gypsy too old to housetrain? Hi everybody, I'm going to apologize in advance in case this gets too long, lol.
She is almost 3 yrs old and has been home with me for 1 month now. She was trained at her previous home (with a doggie door and pee pads). When I first brought her home she wouldn't pee outside because she had never had to be on a leash to pee before. She would hold it until she was absolutely desperate because she refused to use the pee pad or to pee on the lino, she'd pee on the carpet immediately if she got a chance. Her previous home had no carpet so I think she thought it was better to go there than to go on the lino (she knew that was a no no from before).
I kept her in the bathroom with a babygate when I couldn't watch her and she never went in there. The trouble is now she's finally learned to go outside on the leash (about 90 % of the times when I take her out), which is great but she's also decided that it's OK to pee or poop on the bathroom floor if she has to go while she's in there. Even if I put a pee pad in there she won't use it. So I'm wondering if I should start putting her in her crate when I can't watch her. Will she ever learn that she can't go in the house if I never let her loose? As long as I'm home and keeping an eye on her I can take her outside and she's good, it's the rest of the time I'm wondering about.
I'm just not sure really why she refused to use the pee pads here when she was already used to them and why she has now decided that it's OK to pee on the lino when she wouldn't when she first came home here. Does anyone have any ideas? I guess what I want to know is will she learn if I have to start from the beginning with crating her like you do a puppy or is she too old to retrain?
I hope this makes sense and I'd appreciate any advice I can get. I love her to pieces already and there's no danger that we'll get rid of her because of having these problems. I told my husband that the worst thing that would happen is that we'll have to get rid of the carpet and put in laminate, lol. I'm not sure if he was impressed or not but at least he didn't say no.
Thank you all so much for any help you can give me.
