I use Frontline Plus on Piper. We live in a wooded area, she's outside often and I walk her everyday on trails near the marshes. I check Piper every night and I do find ticks but most of the time they aren't attached, just walking through her hair. The ticks will still go on the dog but they usually don't feed and drop off. That's the bad part. I'll find ticks walking across the floor, on the furniture and in my bed if I miss one during our nightly search. Ticks are the worse in the spring and the fall.
