Question Petroleum Jelly for laxative?

I feed my ferret and Harley a regular amount of ferret lax to keep their bowels in check but I'm getting sick and tired of paying $10 for 4 ounces of petroleum and molasses.. So I'm wondering if anyone else just uses plain petroleum jelly for the same purpose? Bc goodness knows that I can get a HUGE bottle of vasaline at walmart for like $2 and add some molasses and save a ton of money.. Here's the ingredients list on the ferret lax..

petrolatum, malt extract, molasses, cod liver oil, soybean oil, tocopgeryl acetate.
