Teaching the "stay" command is vital. When walking him, and you see another dog coming your way, get him into the "sit and stay position". It helps if you have one of his favorite treats in hand. Keep telling him to stay until the dog has left, rewarding him while you are doing this. After hearing no over and over again, dogs just become inattentive. However, if you train them to do something, to be productive through commands, then it activates their minds and keeps them involved in what you are trying to get them to do, and not what they want to do! I am a firm believer in teaching through positive reinforcement, it has always worked for me and the pups. |
