Depends... How big is the kitchen area that he'd be in? How big is the playpen? And what is it made of? Mine never stayed in a crate. We used the xpen in our living room (tile floors). We had their bed, potty pads, food/water and toys in there for them. As they got a little older we took the xpen out of the living room and gated it off so that they didn't have access to the rest of the house. The next step was to add the kitchen within the gated area. Of course we continued to open it up as they got older and better at potty training. We never has a problem with chewing furniture or walls. We still close the doors to the bathrooms when we leave - I just don't want them to possibly lick the area around the tub/shower/toilet that may have residue from cleaning products - even though I'm very careful about it.
