Vaccination for Lepto is not recommended for any small breed dogs and many large breed dogs because of the reported incidences of severe, acute reaction to that vaccine, including death. Any small animal vet knows this and if your vet is insisting that your dog get this vaccine, I would change vets immediately.
All your pup needs is the DHPP- and Rabies (required by state) nothing else. Do not let your vet talk you into getting any other vaccines, they are all way too new and most people I know who have tried them, their dogs have had bad reactions to them. (dental vac, flu vac, Giardia vac...) Do not allow your vet to give the DHPP and Rabies during the same visit. Vaccines challenge a pup's immune system, and Yorkies' systems can get overloaded when this is done. I get my pups vaccines a month apart. They get the DHPP at one visit (one injection) and a month later I take them back in for their Rabies. They all do fine on this schedule. Should one have a problem with the combo in one day, I would further break it down until the pup could tolerate it well.
The DHPP is a 5 in 1 combo. The 7in1 combos contain Lepto and Corona. I do not give Corona to my pups either.
Even if your pup has had one Lepto vac and had no problem with it, many times it's the second booster that can trigger the bad reaction. I don't give vaccines at home because I do not have the drugs/facilities to treat them if they do have a bad reaction to the vaccines. It is not worth risking my dogs lives.
Ask your vet (or the new vet) what they recommend for your area... then explain what you want and don't want. You are the consumer/customer, the vet works for you, and needs to make you happy. If a vet is not willing to work with you on these issues, I would pick up my pup and walk right out of the office, never to be seen again! |
