I have exactly the same issue with Bella. I started growing out her visor to see if her top knot would be thicker. But, as you posted, I think I'm going to have the same thinning problems you experienced. Her hair is so thin and soft on her head and it breaks easily. She looks cutest with the little alligator clip barrettes because the plain band for the top knot looks a bit silly. I just twist a bit of her hair and add the clip and the clip makes it look like she has more hair then she does. I can actually keep the hair on her head a bit shorter as well which makes it a bit fluffier.
My issue is figuring out where to part the hair by the corner of her eyes to cut the visor. She had her nose shaved when I got her so we're in the midst of growing that out. The problem is the hair on her nose is about the same length as the hair in her visor. Perhaps a video will help figure out where that part should be; I'm headed to youtube now to investigate!
