We didn't feed him anything unusual..the only thing I can think of is a rawhide bone that he had two nights ago that was all over his beard....he really got into it and it broke up into tiny little pieces. Maybe that is the reason?

YES YES YES....the rawhide and some chew treats "could" cause this type of stomach/intestinal upset. You say it "broke into pieces"......it must have been a different type chewy.....rawhide do not break into pieces. His little system is trying to elimate the substance. You are lucky....many times they end up with a bowel obstruction because they cannot digest the "material".....so seeing stools is a good thing. When something foreign enters the bowel.....the intestines will produce an over abundance of mucus to aid in the movement thru the bowel. So this is probably some of what you witnessed. Sometimes very loose stools too.
Keep him hydrated and offer food but do not force him. Try a little jar of baby strained chicken to keep his energy up. I would call your vet just to be sure......wth a trip comming up that would be the prudent thing to do. If possible I would also take "his pen" with you to help ease any stress he might feel from a trip and new surroundings. You do not want him getting stressed at this time....that might complaicate matters further.
If you see any blood......any vomiting.....he needs a vet ASAP....do not wait....go to the emergency clinic if after hours. Also he defiantly needs a vet if he is sick more than 24 hours.
