He won't be that way for life. Lots and lots of them go thru this "stage" and it can be stopped. However, if it was me, I'd use an x-pen for his time-outs and not his crate. His crate, at least to me, should be a place where he feels safe and likes to be in. I would be afraid to use it as a place of punishment.
