Default need opinions my yorkie has ear problems

i have an 8 year old yorkie that has been plagued with allergy induced ear infections for the past few years..for the past several months hher episodes have gotten mor frequent and more severe...she scratches, chews her paw and cries..i give her benedryl but ive been having to give it to her every 3 hours lately...my vet suggested surgery..i visited a surgeon and i was expecting procedure to clean the canals...I was quite shocked when he advised a total removal of both ear canals! this is major surgery, very painfull, she will be hospitalized and on morphine for 3 days, and her hearing will be impaired...the side effects could be damage to her facial nerve causing partial or complete paralysis of her face....please help with advice, sugestions or similar experiences...i do not want to proceed with surgery, but i do not want her to be in pain...thanks janet
