Confused Advice please (some what long and yucky)

Tucker has always been a "puker".. by that I mean, if his stomach is empty he will throw up, drinks water to fast etc.
However, for the past 2 weeks, he has been throwing up more. About once a week, sometimes twice, consisted of a small amount of food. I wasnt too concerned because it didnt effect him other wise, he was still eating/drinking fine, playing, poo's stayed firm and he was just at the vets and was told that he was healthy.
Towards the end of last week, he was having more bouts of throwing up and was burping a ton. Sunday he was really not feeling well and I was going to call the vets on monday. He didnt eat, laid around the majority of the day, was burping a ton, threw up 3 times. Before we were getting ready for bed, he started dry hacking and did it for several minutes and then let out the biggest man sized burp I have ever heard. Then he seemed fine, laid down in his kennel and went to sleep. Yesterday morning, he did eat some, poo's were normal, no throwing up, had more energy and just seemed better so I didnt call the vets. Half way through the morning, he climbed up on a pile of clothes that I had just taken out of the dryer and threw up all over, it just came flying out of his mouth..(sorry).. no warning. It consisted of mostly water. I called the vets, told them what was going on, they said that if it continues to bring him in. At his afternoon meal, I gave him some wet prescription SD i/d that I have on hand for my sheltie. He ate it with no problem and kept it down. So later during the evening I offered him some dry of the i/d agian, he ate it and kept it down. This morning, he is doing so much better, ate good, no more gas,no throwing up, he has a ton more engery. So for the next few days as long as he stays eating it Im going to keep him on it.
After all that, here is my question... Could it be from the higher protein food he is on? I ask this because when he was a puppy I had him on TOTW and he had some of same issues. Once I changed his food to a different brand he did better, I figured it was just the TOTW not agreeing with him.
He is on Acana grain free (33%) and I do give him a few teaspoons of canned EVO in the morning. He has been on the Acana for about 3/4 months. Advice please?
