Change pitch of growl (high to low) and change volume until the expected response is achieved.
This is what I did with Bailey, If he bit me hard, I let out a sound as close to a mothers yelp as I could, Bailey would just suddenly stop and look at me and would back off, and if he would bite again he was much more gentle.
