I never crate trained so I can't offer any advice on that, but I can tell you that by letting your puppy have full run of the house that she will probably never be house trained that way. I never give mine full run of the house until I am absolutely, positively 100% sure that they are as well house trained as they can be. To me, that's inviting a failure.
