That is interesting that Kaji would not respond to Bear. My Teddy was the same way -- wouldn't respond to his old name. I tested him for curiosity's sake because he answered to "Teddy" immediately -- as in, during the car ride home from the breeder. I didn't tell her what I was going to name him so she could not have trained him. Very strange.
