5 1/2? meh neuter now. We did at exactly that age, and it was something as simple as we were going on our (late) honeymoon, and needed him to be a bit healed before going to grandma's house. It was fine, and it was the vet's suggestion since he had started marking like CRAZY...
He wore a cone for 2 straight weeks though, and you think marking's bad? Wait until they can't go outside or take a bath for 2 weeks, and you have to watch to make sure they don't get at their stitches... ha! That's fun....
