You are right on target, Ashley. Since they were asking this guy to pull a special shift, it was quite wrong to fire him. They must have had an agenda or they wouldn't have done that.

Fortunately, the guy is smart enough to know that this was a human interest story that the local paper would pick up on if he told them, and a lot of people would get mad at the "evil corporate giant" if this were made public.

I am sure he's making more money using his specialized training now, so it all worked out in the end.

When you are in the military, you are trained to "go by the book" but make the call when you have to break the rules to accomplish the mission within bounds; which is also what managers should have the authority to do.

In defense of Pet Smart (I shop there a lot as most of us do I imagine), I understand the logic of the rule, i.e., workers not bringing in a pet when its not helping you to do the job they are paying you to do. In this case, they should have understood the difference. And in no way was this a breach that would have called for the guy to lose his job.
