Some are born that way, however as the pup grows the bones grow together or sometimes further apart. If they stay open or grow further apart the danger is present. and the holes can be round or slit or an actual plus sign design. Due to the way the bones shift on the head...just as a human babies does. However, if they do not close or there is not enough room for them the close then the risk increases not to mention the obvious great risk of trauma from the brain not having a bone to cover it in that area. One of my pups fontanels is about the size of a dime (she is 3 pounds full grown) which is large in comparison to her size. The others is about the size of a pea and she is 3.5 pounds. As stated, they are both fine but it bears watching forever.
It is something that your vet should be aware of and is monitoring as she grows. And as I said, should have been found on the first vet exam at the breeders and told to you. As this breeder also should be watching for future pups being born with open fonts. This is a common problem with chihuahuas and is becoming more common with Yorkies being bred with the smaller "babydoll" "appleheads" as it is with the chis according to my vet. Not saying they all do, just the chances are higher.
