Some grocery stores sell their rental rug doctors after a fairly short time. They can be gotten fairly cheap, but, I guess being used you probably don't get any kind of warranty. I had a hoover that broke in a year, and the repair place said their motors were terrible, but that was 10 years ago, so they may be better now. I also had a heated Bissel that lasted for ever, but I gave it away because, I pulled up the carpet and redid the hardwood, and tiled the rest. That was the ultimate solution hehe.
