We bought our current one (Frigidaire, side by side, water/ice in door) new 13 years ago and it's worked fine for the most part. The ice maker portion quit working a few years back and even though dh knows how to fix it, he doesn't want to hassle with it (I guess
) So, we've been using trays or buying ice.
I really don't like the water from the door though - it can be a constant mess to keep clean, splattering on the floor, all over the front of the fridge and in the little tray. The filter has to be replaced often and even though dh knows how to change it out...it is kind of like the ice maker - it doesn't get taken care of, so we end up using tap water.
I think it's easier to access items in a side by side versus a freezer in the bottom. But then I've not seen newer models so maybe the designs have changed.
The one things I wish we would have bought a larger size and will with our next one. During holidays or family gatherings I run out of room quickly!
