Default Won't sit on hard surfaces!

My puppy won't perform simple commands such as sit, lay down, and roll over on hard surfaces. We have hardwood floors and when we first taught him tricks we would put a blanket under him so when he rolled over he wouldn't hit his head on the floor. (He use to slip a lot when running around and hit his head with a big clunk). That was a BIG mistake! Now he only sits when there is a soft surface. When we tell him to sit, laydown, or roll over he would walk to his bed or anything soft he can find and perform the trick. When I give him commands without anything soft nearby, he just stares at me. I would like to now how to retrain him so that he would sit on hard surfaces.
