8 weeks old and only one pound is AWFULLY young as well as TOO little to be away from Mom. Since you already have him, YOU are going to have to replace his Mom and give him the training and security that Mom would be doing if he was still with her. At 8 weeks, he only knows mom and his siblings.. now he is lonely.. If he was my puppy, I would get one of the pouches that you can put him in to carry him across your chest so he is close to you. He will feel so much more secure. Of course you do need to be careful that you do not coddle him too much. Usually it just takes a short amount of CUDDLE time to make them feel secure and at 8 weeks he should fall asleep quite often. I found when I wanted my puppies to settle down in the x-pen for the night that what helped was to put blankets all around the xpen so he cannot see out. If it is chilly, cover the top also. Keeping the sleeping area dark helps comfort them. At least that is what I have experienced with all of mine.
