I just went through this a few weeks ago with one of mine, and I agree completely with everything Jencar98 said.
Mine was practically back to himself the next day, but the doctor restricted his activity for 5 days. By that time he was back to normal.
I've never had to put one of my boys in a collar after neutering as it doesn't seem to bother them much. If your boy does seem to lick at the area excessively, try giving him a bully stick or other chew to distract him.
