Marking is a way that dogs make their presence known to other dogs, it's kind of like a dogs calling card, it tells other dogs who they are and if they are fertile. The hormone testosterone influences marking, and the testes make the bulk of testosterone, but the adrenal glands make a little as well. After removal of the testes, the testosterone is in the blood for about a month, so some dogs will continue to mark for a month after neutering. Other dogs in the house influence how much hormone is being produced.
