so tough. We've only had to do it once (also with my beloved cat Einstein, she was 20). I never imagined it would be so tough...not that I really knew what to expect. My heart goes out to you and your husband, it's really inexplicable...the emotions afterwards, you know?
Ozzie's purring was telling you "thank you Mom and Dad, for not letting me hurt, I love you" - what a sweet kitty to give you that message, so peaceful, affirming. What a love.
