Do you think your pup has tapeworms of some other type of worm?

If it is tapeworm, be aware that there are two kinds of tapeworms. One is caused by ingesting an infected flea, and the other kind is caused when a dog eats infected vermin (mice, rats, etc). The OTC treatment ONLY works on the type of tapeworm that is caused by eating infected vermin, NOT the type that is contracted by eating an infected flea. The treatment for that type is by prescription only, so you would have to go to a Vet. If your dog has a tapeworm and hasn't been eating mice, it is a safe assumption that he has the type contracted by ingesting fleas and needs to see a vet.
