I think he's a very lucky guy to have you adopt him. If his previous owner felt nothing for him to be able to dump him off at the shelter I'm sure he didn't have a very good life with her anyway. He may have not been abused, but I doubt he knows what love is. I'm sure you'll both enrich each others lives.
