You are correct about the location. There are two of them. One on each side of the anus. If they are full, you will be able to feel them. You push in on the side of them and then push up and basicly milk them a few times until they are empty. (Never force if they don't release)! That usually means an impaction. In that case, a vet should do it. And you are right about the smell. When I am grooming in the shop, I wet the dog down, empty the anal glands and be ready with the hose and soap!
