I was always under the impression that it needed to be mixed (the new with the old) and a gradual switch to prevent stomach problems or diarreah.. so I was surprised to be told this more than once at a pet supply store. On another note... someone mentioned Fromms.. I have to say that mine eat Innova small bites... but at one time I wanted to switch them to Fromm and got free samples and they LOVED every type of Fromms they tried.... but we didn't switch to it because I cannot buy it locally.
I always switch slowly, even when changing foods within the same brand. Chelsea's tummy gets very upset if I try to change it too fast for her. One of my boys will also occasionally get an upset stomach during a food change if done too fast, but his doesn't happen every time. It's no bother to switch foods slowly, and so much easier on me in the long run, so I'd just rather take that precaution and avoid problems. Oh, and just to add...I do feed only premium, grain-free foods.
