I'm from MI too and we really do have alot of snow! My dog is pee pad trained, it just made the most sense for us, although he will poo outside most of the time. The pads we have used already have a scent, so we have never used a spray. We use the Nature's Miracle Ultra Lock pads. After trying some different ones, we like these the best.
As for the carpet spray, we used Natures Miracle for the pee spots and Woolite Pet + Oxygen for the other messes. It works great, even on big messes and we have white carpet
